GMRS 2-Way Radios
|
GMRS 2 way
radios are related to FRS, however because a FCC license should be
obtained, you getter better range, because you are rewarded, with extra
power, and advanced features. GMRS stands for General Mobile
Radio Service, and it is generally channels 15-22. At GMRS 2 way
radio channels and frequencies, you are actually allowed to run up to a
max allowable of 50 watts (5 watts max by most handhelds). Also,
with GMRS, if you have the right radios, you can use an external higher
gain antenna. Better yet, on GMRS you are allowed to operate a repeater
system. A radio repeater is used to receive your signal, then
retransmit it on a common frequency, that multi users may monitor.
By doing this, you can greatly extend your communications prowess
and range.
Because FRS and GMRS are similar in that they both operate within the
462Mhz part of the UHF radio frequency spectrum, therefore they are
often both included with dual band handhelds. Although you don't
need a FCC license to purchase one of these dual band units, the FCC
does request all consumers to obtain a license prior to operating the
GMRS band, due to the extra power and privileges allowed.
